About numindan

Founding member of the Alberta Browncoats Society. Lead organizer of Can't Stop the Serenity Edmonton (2010-2012).

Tell us what you really think…

We held our first meet and greet Shindig recently and think it was a smashing success. Don’t take our word for it though. One of our new members wrote about her experience at the event:

The Alberta Browncoat Society held its first ever Shindig on November 17, 2012 at the Alberta Place Suite Hotel. Attendance numbered over 35 folks who came out to share their love of Joss Whedon’s *Firefly* and *Serenity*. The event had a nibbles buffet as well as a group sing with music provided by the talented Vanessa Cardui.

Not only was it ABS’ first Shindig, it was also my own first incursion into a fan group like this. I was nervous as I  walked in, but right away people made me feel included. As a girl in a geek world, I often feel alone. But I definitely felt some vindication to see a large cross section of enthusiasts, both male and female. There was the obvious conversation centered around the ‘Verse, but as the night moved forward subjects far and wide were debated. I was disappointed not to win one of the amazing door prizes, but the second go of “Hero of Canton” quickly cheered me right up.

I love the fact that science fiction fans are so warm and welcoming. We have a sense of community, and work hard to exemplify the values we watch every week. ABS, and indeed Browncoats around the globe, show their support of Equality Now as well as other local charities with the yearly Can’t Stop the Signal fundraiser. Since the 2006 inception of Can’t Stop the Serenity, over $600,000 worldwide has been raised.

Thanks to Pockee for taking the time to write our first event review.

Due to the busy holiday season, we won’t be planning a gathering in December. However, we’d like to have a group dinner in January. Stay tuned for updates.

Membership Now Available

Since the beginning, the Alberta Browncoats society has been a very small organization. You might be shocked to learn that from 2009-2012 our not-for-profit organization has consisted of a 5-7 member board of directors, a core group of 4-6 volunteers who helped out during specific events (CSTS, conventions, etc.) and a knitting team of 6-12 knitters depending on the year.

When we’ve said we’re small and mighty we certainly meant it!

This also explains why group gatherings are few and far between. Our small group has been stretched to the limits these past few years.

Recently, there has been significant interest regarding how to become a member of the Alberta Browncoats Society. At our 2012 Annual General Meeting (AGM) we took the time to define our membership and all it entails. One of the most important things to all of us is that we focus on remaining a service organization. In addition to membership fees we’ll require a small volunteer commitment – minimum 4 hours per year – from each of our members.

It’s time for a shindig!

Don your best flowery bonnet, grab your rainstick and join us for our first meet and greet. Listen to shiny music, partake in the Kaylee inspired buffet (nibbles), win a door prize and make new friends.

Join us Saturday, Nov 17 at the Alberta Place Suite Hotel (10049-103 St). Doors open at 7:30pm.

Admission $5*
*Funds raised will defray the cost of the event. Any additional proceeds will be donated to the Edmonton Youth Empowerment Support Services (YESS).

Round of applause

With Edmonton Expo and the Pure Spec knit-a-thon right around the corner, it’s time to take a few moments and thank our knitting army. They work their fingers to the bone to help raise funds for EQ, KNTR, and YESS.org!

When you buy a hat from us, please keep in mind that our knitters devote countless hours making these hats. OK, some of them counted and have determined they’ve spent over 750 hours knitting Jayne Hats over the past 12 months (Bev, Sheelagh)!

The team is made up of many people and varying skill levels. Some are locally made (Edm & area), some are made by friends and family of AB Browncoats located in other provinces (BC, NB) and we even have a volunteer knitter located in OH, USA!

Sometimes hats are big. Sometimes they’re tiny. Sometimes there’s a dropped stitch or slightly silly ribbing. As we all know, Ma Cobb had some challenges knitting the perfect hat as well… All are perfect as they raise funds for great charities.

So from all of us, to our knitting team, thanks so much for everything you do!
