About numindan

Founding member of the Alberta Browncoats Society. Lead organizer of Can't Stop the Serenity Edmonton (2010-2012).

Earth That Was: January Shindig [01/2013]

11 Browncoats braved the snowy weather last month to gather at the Old Spaghetti Factory. Conversation centered around future gatherings and fundraisers. Event ideas were thrown out, including Special Hell screening, potlucks and trips to special events such as Star Wars: Identities (February 23 at the Telus Science Centre).

Fundraising plans include the annual Can’t Stop the Serenity (CSTS), which features a charity auction, and participation in community based activities such as YESS’ Homeless for a Night team event at Telus Field.

A call for volunteers to help with the CSTS auction, as well as manning convention booths, was sounded. And of course, knitters are always needed. If you are interested in volunteering, please let us know by e-mailing info@albertabrowncoats.com.

Karaoke & Knitting – Weekly Drop-In

We’re happy to announce a new weekly drop-in event. Knit if you’ve got a project on the go (might we recommend Jayne Hats?). Sing if you desire. Have a few wobbly pops & get to know your fellow Browncoats.

Karaoke starts at 9pm. Drop-in between 8:30-9pm to find the group (look for people knitting Jayne Hats) and get yourself settled.

Karaoke takes place every Friday in the lounge at the Sands hotel (12340 Fort Road Northwest). It’s on a transit route and walking distance from Coliseum LRT & Transit station (5 block walk). The karaoke host is very nice and the staff doesn’t mind if we come knit at their location. They’ve gotten quite used to seeing a number of us knitting there over the past few months.

Did you know we have a Shindig Calendar? As new events are planned details will be added to the calendar.

The Alberta Browncoats Society is sponsored by Christie Communications and Jay C. Noden Professional Corporation.

that hat makes you look like an idiot

Vanessa Cardui, fabulous Calgary based musician and shiny Browncoat, has written an ode to our favourite cunning hat. Now she’s looking for help to make her newest masterpiece complete. Please send Vanessa pics of you wearing your Jayne hat (animals & toys too!) and help make her vision come true. Pictures can be emailed to vanessacarduiartist (at) gmail (dot) com.

Ma Cobb’s slightly odd sister’s knitting army

Our knitting team has a new home. Thanks to the wonderful team at the Carrot community coffee house (9351-118 ave) we’ll be swinging into their comfy chairs and couches every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month from 6:30-9pm.

This will be a standing date/time for the foreseeable future. No need to RSVP or attend every session. Drop in when you can.

On the 2nd Wed of the month, we’ll be sharing the space with a visual artists collective 😉

Note: First session is Jan 9, 2013.

Penny Drive

UPDATE: LAST PUBLIC DROP-OFF FOR PENNY DRIVE
The last public drop-off for our YESS penny drive will take place on the evening of Wednesday, January 30, 2013. Bring your pennies and pocket change to fill our bin at the Carrot (9351-118 ave) anytime between 6:30-9:00 pm.

YESS.org is in desperate need of funds. Our next big fundraiser isn’t until the end of April (Calgary Expo) we’re hoping we can gather together and do some smaller style fundraisers in the meantime. As we’re about to see the end of the penny in Canada, this seems a great time to take them off your hands while benefiting YESS. Please save up your pennies for the month of January (all existing pennies in your penny jar are also welcome to join in) and send us a wave to make arrangements for pickup/drop off on or before Jan 31.

You can also drop off pennies to our members during our bi-weekly knitting sessions at the Carrot (Jan 9th & 23rd).  The Carrot is located at 9351-118 ave and we will be there from 6:30-9pm. Can’t make it to the Carrot? We’ll also be collecting change at or weekly Karaoke & knitting sessions at the Sands Hotel lounge (12340 Fort Road) on Friday Jan 18th & 25th. At both locations, look for the group knitting in orange, red and yellow 😉

If you’re interested in helping with pickups, please let us know.

Depending on the number of donations, we may also need volunteers to help count and wrap the pennies so we can exchange them for cash to donate to YESS.

PS: nickles, dimes & quarters are also welcome additions to the pot.
