Alberta Browncoats Society

Once we aimed to misbehave

The Alberta Browncoats Society was a registered, volunteer-run, not-for-profit fan organization based in Edmonton, Alberta. Formed in 2009, the Society united local fans of Firefly and Serenity for community-building, charity fundraising, and fandom events.

If you can't do something smart...

Active through to October 2024, this shiny group of fans did something right; raising $66,400 for women's and children's charities while in operation.

The Alberta Browncoats Society contributed 15 years of community-building and charity support. Social and fundraising activities included monthly meetups, charity knitting, convention booth presence at Comic and Pop-Culture conventions throughout Alberta, sponsorship of other Browncoat groups located in Canada and the US, and movie/tv screenings. Their volunteers, known for knitted Jayne hats, game days, and warm fandom spirit, left a lasting impression on the Canadian Firefly fandom.

A longtime volunteer and contributor of random ideas, the Chair of the Alberta Browncoats Society joined the board of the 501(c)3 registered California Browncoats in 2024.

Can't Stop the Signal

Nathan Fillion and the rest of the shiny crew officially announced that a new "Firefly" animated series (The Hollywood Reporter, Variety) is in development, revealing the project on March 15, 2026 during a live Once We Were Spacemen podcast taping at Awesome Con. The revival will feature most of the original cast returning and is being developed through Fillion’s production banner Collision33 in partnership with 20th Television Animation, with showrunners Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters attached and early concept art completed by ShadowMachine. Fillion confirmed that the series takes place between the original 2002 run and Serenity (2005), and encouraged fans to boost visibility and engagement to help secure a streaming home.

What Now?

The brilliant minds behind the 2006 Browncoat Backup Bash and some Firefly fan-groups are working on a plan to help boost the signal. Stay tuned for shiny updates in the days to come.
