And we’re home… Calgary Expo 2014

Huge kudos to our amazing volunteer team for all their hard work this weekend. Our booth staff give a lot of themselves to attend the Calgary Expo each year. They pay their own way (gas, food, lodging) and take vacations days from work to make our booth an amazing place to complete all your “guilt free” shopping . Next time you see them give them a big thumbs up for their dedication to our organisation year after year.

Thanks to the phenomenal support of Calgary Expo attendees, we raised a record $5575 CAD for charity! Pat yourselves on the backs; you deserve it!

The breakdown for the funds raised this past weekend are:

*Funds were distributed to G.R.I.T Calgary on April 28th. As YESS, KNTR and EN are all beneficiaries of our on-line auction, we will be completing our donations to these organizations later in May.

Thanks also go out to Matt Stevens (Geekographs) and the South Eastern Browncoats for their donations to our table raffles this weekend.

We also owe a debt of gratitude to Kyla Richards (Kyla Richards Sculpture Studio), Matthew Bryan, Felicia Day, Nathan Fillion and Jason Palmer (Jason Palmer Studios) for their amazing donations to our next charity auction scheduled for this fall!

Earth That Was: Browncoat Bowling [March 22, 2014]

Event: Bowling at Bonnie Doon Lanes
Intrepid Reporter: Andy

Gutter, spare, STRIKE!!!

Three words that anyone would recognize. Bowling was this month’s shindig. We had a good turn out on a windy day, with new people from town and literally from across the globe. Setting up and playing in 3 lanes side by side, bowling balls were thrown, tossed and one or two bounced down the lanes. And some of us tried to beat the odds by bowling two balls at once but with no luck. Hey, were not professionals, we’re here to have fun and raise money for charity.

After a somewhat successful afternoon of bowling, we headed to Boston Pizza for food and drinks to socialize and reminisce about the elusive strike that never was and to get to know one another, and become friends. Which is the way the ‘verse should
be.

Between our bottle drive and bowling, a total of $480.00 was raised for Valour Place with a big thank you to Harold Parlee for his generous donation. The money will go to a good cause.

April is Calgary Expo time and the guest list is fantastic, something for everyone. As always, the Alberta Browncoats will have a charity booth (#200) stocked with shiny goodies.

Until then, stay shiny!!

First Annual (we hope) On-line Charity Auction

Once upon a time, a fabulously amazing individual (you may know him as John Barrowman), suggested we branch out in our fundraising activities to share our donated goodies with the rest of the world. Not one to argue with a great idea, especially when it comes with donated auction items, we’re launching our first annual on-line charity auction.

Our auction will run from April 1 to April 30 and proceeds will be split between Edmonton’s Youth Empowerment and Support Services (www.yess.org – a local homeless shelter for teens), Kids Need to Read (www.kidsneedtoread.org – a US-based children’s literacy charity), Equality Now (www.equalitynow.org – an international women’s advocacy organization), and the Comic Legends Legal Defense Fund (www.clldf.ca/).

Our goal is to raise $5,000 to be split between these wonderful organizations.

The items appearing in the auction will change as the month progresses. Each auction item should appear on the site for a minimum of 14 days. One or two special items will be available for bidding for the full 30-day period.

We welcome bids from all over the world and auction winners will be liable for all shipping charges for their items.

Items are being shipped from Canada. Available shipping options include Canada Post, FedEx, UPS.

When an auction has concluded, we will contact the winning bidder to arrange for shipping of the item. The winner will determine shipping preferences (company, speed of delivery, insurance value) based on available options. Winner will be expected to pay the shipping fees based on their selection prior to the items being shipped.

Buyers located in Edmonton, AB and surrounding areas may arrange for local pick-up of any items they win without charge.

We would like to extend a special thanks to our item donors. Their generosity and support has been amazing. Each donor will be identified on the auction site and individual auction listings.

Curious as to what we’ll have up for auction? We’ll post the auction link on the website, Twitter and Facebook accounts on April 1, 2014!
